Martingales are necessary collars for sighthound breeds, like greyhounds and whippets, who's heads are smaller than their necks - allowing them to easily back out of regular collars.
Unlike regular collars, martingales have a cinch loop that restricts when a dog pulls on a leash avoiding the possibility of escape - and relaxes when stopped or off leash.
Martingale (also know as greyhound or lupine) dog collars are popular for gentle control vs a choke chain. Originally designed for sighthounds, they also work well for dogs who try to back out of their traditional buckle collars.
Also popular by agility and flyball trainers who want gentle control of their dog at all times. The collars are designed to lay flat on the dog’s neck and are often much wider than traditional collars.
A martingale collar should be fitted to your dog's neck and when the control loop is pulled, the two sides should be close but not touching.
When properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose when it is not in use.
If properly fitted, a martingale collar is safe to wear everyday. When used for training as an alternative to a choke chain, the martingale collar should be adjusted to fit slightly tighter for the time of supervised training only.
